Junior Cricket

Our goal as a community club is to offer quality cricket experiences for players of all abilities from age 5-18. This summary is designed to give you an overview of our junior playing pathway - further details for each age are available in the drop down menu for Junior Cricket.

Stage One

The starting point for youngsters in Years 1-4 is our midget cricket programme. This is a weekly fun based session offered at Ken Maunder Park on Friday evenings. It is open to both boys and girls. Parents are welcome to come down and enjoy a drink while they watch their kids having fun.

Check out the midgets section for further details.

Stage Two

In Year 3 some children like to move up into team cricket playing Action cricket on Saturday mornings, while some prefer to stay in the Midget programme on Friday evenings for another year. The choice is yours. If you do want to play Saturday morning cricket Suburbs enters Year 3 and Year 4 teams in the Western Districts competitions. Our teams play against other clubs in West Auckland and games are played at different clubs so some travel is involved in West Auckland. At this stage teams are still mixed and open to boys and girls.

Check out the Year 3 & 4 Action Cricket sections for further details or view playing conditions under downloads or at  http://www.westerncricket.co.nz

Stage Three

From Year 5 to Year 8 the cricket splits into girls and boys junior competions organised by Auckland Cricket.

There are two options at Year 5 & 6. The first is traditional hard ball cricket (Hard Ball Smash T20) played in teams of 8. This is for children who want to play more tradiional cricket in a 20 over format.

The second option is soft ball cricket (Soft Ball Sixers) played in teams of six. This is designed for children who are less serious and just want to have a fun time with friends. No gear is required.

There are then three options at Year 7 & 8. The first is traditional hard ball cricket (Hard Ball Smash 40 overs) played in teams of 9 . This is for the players who are most serious over their cricket and want to play longer versions of the game in a 40 over format. The number of team entries in these grades is restricted so player will need to trial to make these teams.

The second option for those children who still want to play more tradiional cricket in a 20 over format is Hard Ball Smash T20 competitions. These are not retricted in number.

The third option is soft ball cricket (Soft Ball Sixers) played in teams of six. This is designed for children who are less serious and just want to have a fun time with friends. No gear is required.

You can choose the competition that best suits your needs and register accordingly. Most competitions are played on Saturday mornings, but some are on Saturday afternoons and there are even some options on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons.

For the transition season where players move schools from Year 8 to Year 9 (Under 14) separate competitions are offered for Term 4 and Term 1.

Check out the Year 5-8 sections for further details or view playing conditions under downloads or at Auckland Cricket Junior Leagues

Stage Four

From Year 9-13 there is a choice between playing for your secondary school or for the club (or both). As a club we enter boys teams in Under 16 and Under 19 teams in the Auckland Cricket competitions and girls teams in the Under 11, Under 13 and Under 16 competitions. There are again both hard ball and softball options.
